Maslow and Our Personal Hierarchy of Needs
Hey there! Welcome back to Focus on You! A podcast dedicated to the individual with something to say but not quite sure how to say it. I’m Dachia.
As you might remember, if you’ve tuned in before, I’m a fan of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
I think there is so much to understand there.
There is so much to understand about ourselves there.
I’m of the opinion or belief, back up, I feel, by evidence, that as a creative and expressive species, we have an inherent need to… create… and express.
And when we do not, we are depressed and unhappy. And we often blame something outside ourselves for that unhappiness. Often it is our job.
I’ve done this myself. I had a job that was very uniform. In fact, I had wear a uniform. There was no ability to joke around or be anything other than the exact job.
I was unhappy there.
But it was years later that I realized that had I done something for myself outside the job, I could have dealt with the job better.
Now, that particular job was emotionally exhausting. Overtime came up and you were commanded to stay for it. So instead of 8 hours it was 12. I very much dislike last minute schedule changes.
But additionally, when I would get home, I just wanted to sleep. I was too tired to do anything creative. I don’t recall even doing any reading that year.
So, I still believe that leaving that job was the best choice for me, but I also feel that others in the same job or similar, would be fine if they found a way to express themselves elsewhere.
I just happen to need a lot of creation and expression time. We all have different need minimums. You need to determine yours.
One way to do that is figure out if you are a pretty happy person the way you are right now. If you are, then I am so happy for you.
Success is not success if you’re not happy and fulfilled.
Now, if you are not real happy or you are actually unhappy or depressed and unfulfilled, before you quit your job, take a little time to yourself and think about what you would like to do in your life. Are you doing it at all right now? If no, then start.
Create something and share it with the world somehow. Either online or in person. Just do something. Don’t self-edit by saying you don’t have enough time to do it the way you really want to. Just start on a project.
If you are reasonably happy and are creating something and sharing with others, which I think is a necessity for the former… then take moment or a weekend and determine how you might ramp it up a notch. Could you do more of the same? Would you want to? Or perhaps there is another project that you’d like to start.
How would you like to share it? Online? An in person course at the local community college? Busking in the subway?
Just be open to whatever ideas come to you. Make note of them. You may have an idea that right this very second does not move you… but in a week, you suddenly realize what a great idea or germ of an idea it is.
Don’t self edit.
You may decide that taking a different job or creating a tiny business is what you need to do. That making less money will still be more rewarding. That you would be happier doing something else. You may. And if that’s the case, I’ll do what I can to encourage and support you.
But you may realize that you simply need to find an outlet for the true you.
Some of us really only need a few hours a week to be ourselves. To create something and share it.
Perhaps it’s to learn to dance and go out dancing.
Perhaps it’s to learn a language or practice a language you already know, and just diving into a local meetup group or group online or making a friend across the pond and you meet on skype.
Honestly, that might be enough or even more than enough for so many odd us.
If it’s not, then let’s chat about what you need to be happy. I’m happy to be a sounding board for you.
